Systems (TSXV: GSI) is, by far and away, the best performing stock during the
first half of 2020 for our Top Ideas.
What a difference six months can make. At the end of 2019,
in our blog post (See: Investorfile
stock picks had a banner year) we were gloating about the investment returns being
generated for most of our Top Ideas. The momentum from 2019 continued
throughout the first eight weeks of 2020, and then COVID-19 arrived in North America and the stock markets took a big hit. Micro
cap and small cap stocks felt the brunt of the pain from the market crash, with
low valuations and little liquidity, both of which are still present today.
Despite the
small/microcap stock doldrums, Investorfile still added two new small cap value
stock picks to its list of Top Ideas in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic:
Ecosynthetix (TSX: ECO) and Boardwalktech Software (TSXV: BWLK). We are pleased
that both of our newcomer stocks have performed well thus far.
As such, in the COVID-19 era, our current total average
returns since inception stands at 185% at the mid-point for 2020 for our
selection of 22 small cap value picks to date. This is notably lower than the
current investment returns Investorfile picks posted at the end of last year.
That said, several of our Top Ideas had stock prices that hit all-time highs
earlier this year. The high-point (highest stock price close) return for all of
our Top Ideas since the Investorfile blog was launched is an impressive 314%,
the average gain over all 22 stocks we have selected to date.
